DUNDAG MASTERS

OPEN WATER SWIMMING Killarney

Three Lakes  13.2 Km Challenge 2009

The idea of forming Dundag Masters Open Water Swimming Club emerged during the Summer of 2008 when an informal group of people with a shared interest in open water swimming came together to swim in Muckross Lake. The lake is surrounded by its picturesque mountains and woodland  which provide a stunning background for swimming.

In August 2008 a group of thirty swimmers completed the first documented swim from Dundag Boathouse to Dinis Cottage, a distance of 1.79 Miles. In 2009 the Muckross Lake Challenge was extended to 4km. We also included a 1 mile swim for those who preferred a shorter distance. In 2010 we hope to extend this to a 5km swim.

In September 2009 five swimmers along with their safety crew became the first people to swim from Lord Brandon’s Cottage to Ross Castle a distance of 13.2 Km. Swimming through the Killarney Valley was a unique experience for all of us. Even the white tailed eagles kept watch over us as we swam along the Long Range.

It is the aim of the club to promote open water swimming in Killarney’s  lakes.

The Dundag Masters Club hopes to contribute to the development of open water swimming as an enjoyable and challenging sport with the Lakes of Killarney at its heart.

Open Water swims of  5k & 10k are now a recognised as Olympic and World Championship events. Killarney’s lakes are not only visually beautiful, they are also a unique natural resource with tremendous potential for open water swims of various distances.

Ireland has many sea, lake and river swims already in place. Killarney’s lakes  should also form part of this group. Our aim is to encourage safe open water swimming for all abilities.
